An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) provides comfort and relief from symptoms of emotional, mental, or psychological challenges. ESAs are recognized as a form of support that helps people live fuller, calmer, and more balanced lives.
PSA Pets makes it simple for your dog or cat to be recognized as an Emotional Support Animal. With the right documentation, your animal may qualify as a reasonable accommodation for a substantially limiting emotional disorder—giving you greater freedom and peace of mind.
Having an ESA makes it easier to bring your pet to stores, restaurants, hotels, ride shares & more.
Federal law may give you the right to live with your pet, even in housing with a “No Pets” policy.
The law may protect you from paying costly pet deposits and monthly fees.

Such a wonderful and easy experience! I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get their dog certified quickly. I was expecting the process to take much longer, but it was amazingly fast and stress-free. Thank you so much for making it simple to support my pet!

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are not allowed in all public places like restaurants, stores, or airplanes. Those access rights are reserved for trained service animals. However, ESAs are protected under housing laws, which means they are generally allowed to live with you in housing that normally does not allow pets.
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is prescribed by a licensed mental health professional as part of a treatment plan for a qualifying emotional or mental health condition such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or stress-related disorders.
The process typically works like this:
1. You complete a short assessment.
2. You are connected with a licensed therapist.
3. If the therapist determines you qualify, they issue an official ESA letter.
4. You can then use that letter for housing accommodations.
Yes. If approved, your ESA letter will be written and signed by a licensed mental health professional such as a psychologist, therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist. The letter includes their license number and must comply with federal and state guidelines.
The main law that protects Emotional Support Animals is the Fair Housing Act (FHA). This federal law requires housing providers to make reasonable accommodations for individuals with Emotional Support Animals, even in buildings that normally do not allow pets.
Some states may have additional ESA laws, but the Fair Housing Act is the primary federal protection.
If you have a valid ESA letter:
- Landlords generally cannot deny your ESA because of a no-pets policy
- They cannot charge pet fees or pet rent for your ESA
- They cannot apply breed or weight restrictions to your ESA
- Your ESA is considered a reasonable accommodation, not a pet
Housing providers can only deny an ESA in limited situations (such as safety risks or certain small owner-occupied buildings).
If you complete the evaluation and the licensed therapist determines you do not qualify, you typically will not be issued an ESA letter. Many services offer a money-back guarantee if you are not approved, so there is no risk in completing the assessment.
A service animal is trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability (for example, guiding someone who is blind or alerting someone to seizures). Service animals have public access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
An Emotional Support Animal does not require special training and provides emotional or mental health support through companionship. ESAs are primarily protected under housing laws, not public access laws.
